Editor treatment narrative

A Toy’s Life
While you’re away the toys will play.

This narrative is about extraordinary events involving everyday life. It will be shot with a combination of stop motion animation and video. The video portion of the animals will be shot at angles that will not show the hands that are controlling the animals. The humans in the story will be shot so that their faces don’t show so that the focus is always on the toys. The video will be in full color at a natural level of saturation because the story is supposed to be one that happens in an otherwise ordinary situation. There will be no dialogue, but there will be sounds effects (such as the animals grunting). There will also be some music, but not necessarily throughout. The main character is a stuffed animal that was given as a gift.

The doorbell rings. A young woman opens the door to find a special gift sitting on her doorstep.  She picks it up, and sees a quick note scrawled from her boyfriend. She hugs the new stuffed animal, and sets it with her others before leaving the house.

The door closes behind the young woman as she leaves, and all of the stuffed animals turn to stare at the newcomer. They lose interest and begin to walk around the house.

A stuffed bear discovers some gummy bears, and begins eating them to the horror of the new stuffed animal. The other toys begin to get out of hand as they enjoy full reign of the house. The newcomer doesn’t want to join in, things are a little too crazy for him.

A food fight starts, with the newcomer in the middle of it. He tries to stop it, and eventually it does stop.

The young woman returns home to discover her house a mess. She doesn’t realize that her toys can come alive, and blames the situation on her dog.

The credits roll.

Script

Two students sitting at a computer, studying together.

Student 1: So, we got assigned honey for our presentation project?

Student 2: Yep. That’s what it says in the email anyway.

Student 1: Well…let’s see what my notes say.

Student 2: Honey is made from bees!

Student 1: Duh. We’re supposed to do it on the nutritional benefits.

Student 2: How can anything that sweet be nutritious?

Student 1: Didn’t you listen to the lecture?

Student 2: Either I missed that class or I was sleeping.

Student 1: And naturally you had to be the one assigned to be my partner

Student 2: Wait a sec while I google honey

Student 1: You know, there’s a section in the textbook about honey

Student 2: Didn’t buy the book

Student 1: How do you expect to pass the class?

Student 2: Not your problem. Why is my internet so slow?

Student 1: According to my notes, the minerals found in honey include calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.

Student 2: Great! Honey is a regular pharmacy

Student 1: Cut the sarcasm

Student 2: Well, this is a dumb assignment. 3,860 results for google. Sheesh

Student 1: Are you going to help or not? If you read my textbook instead of sifting through a lot of phony google results while I look at my notes, we might get somewhere.

Student 2: Fine. But what amazing fact would I find in that textbook. Look at it? It looks like a million paper cuts waiting to happen

Student 1: Shhh, I’m trying to think.

Student 2: Hey, honey has protein!

documentary brainstorm

1. This documentary would focus on the career of Phil Wenzel and how he came to do what he does. Phil Wenzel is a chef at Notre Dame. He works at the Fatima House serving the retired priests who work there. To become a certified chef he interned at Notre Dame for three years. After that, he got his job at Fatima House. The reason he loves to cook? It isn’t an office job. As an undergraduate student, Phil struggled to finish his degree because its demands to sit at a desk all day. He realized that he needed to be physically involved with his career choice, not just mentally, and so he became
interested in cooking. While cooking he could move about the kitchen and he could also use creativity to embellish or reinvent dishes. Phil uses his skills at cooking not just in his work setting but also to become involved in his community. He assists at his parish in organizing a night spent in cooking for the Homeless Shelter.

2. This documentary would focus on the young adult community at St. Pius Church in Granger and its coordinator Sean Allen. Sean helps organize events for young adults so that they can engage in their faith while connecting with each other and their community. Sean creates a variety of events including Bible Study meets, service projects in the community, and fellowship events. He enjoys his work in helping young adults grow in faith and become involved in their community. Sean works both in an office setting where he sets up activities and in a more involved setting where is takes part in those activities with the young adults while guiding them.

3. This documentary would focus on the mission of Reins of Life therapeutic horseback riding center and the experiences of those involved. Reins of Life assists those both mentally, physically, and emotionally challenged through horseback riding sessions. The sessions all take place on a horse for the riders, but vary in the activities the riders do, from playing musical stalls to making a pizza for their horse. Volunteers can pick and choose how they are involved in Reins of Life, from cleaning stalls to feeding horses, from leading the horses to being a side walker. Thomas Hubbard, whose perspective will be included in the documentary, is a volunteer at Reins of Life and has been for the past two years. He currently works as a side walker, whose job is to ensure the safety of the riders while helping them engage in the activities.

Analysis of Music Video

This video is a narrative talking about a real life event. The singer is telling his experience flying with United Airlines. The video is made up of a series of wide shots with a couple medium shots of the singer’s guitar. The angle is straight on for the majority of the video, with only a couple clips being taken from a high or lower angle than the subject. The lighting is natural light with some studio lighting when the singer is shown singing against a black backdrop. The depth of field is deep, except in one scene where the clip of the artist strumming his guitar starts out of focus and then is focused as it progresses. The camera cuts from shots of the singer telling the story in his studio to shots showing a dramatized version of the story. The cuts match what the vocalist is singing. The camera has no movement itself, all of the movement is performed by the actors themselves and the camera remains stationary throughout the video.

My name is Lillian and I am a senior majoring in graphic design. I have two jobs on campus (behind the scenes at Office of Admissions and also at the Wiekamp Educational Resource Commons), so between work and classes I practically live on campus. When I'm not on campus I enjoy spending time outdoors or reading. Although I have created videos in previous classes and know how to use Premiere and After Effects, my goal for a career is in the print or web side of graphic design. I would enjoy working for a magazine or designing websites.
