documentary brainstorm

1. This documentary would focus on the career of Phil Wenzel and how he came to do what he does. Phil Wenzel is a chef at Notre Dame. He works at the Fatima House serving the retired priests who work there. To become a certified chef he interned at Notre Dame for three years. After that, he got his job at Fatima House. The reason he loves to cook? It isn’t an office job. As an undergraduate student, Phil struggled to finish his degree because its demands to sit at a desk all day. He realized that he needed to be physically involved with his career choice, not just mentally, and so he became
interested in cooking. While cooking he could move about the kitchen and he could also use creativity to embellish or reinvent dishes. Phil uses his skills at cooking not just in his work setting but also to become involved in his community. He assists at his parish in organizing a night spent in cooking for the Homeless Shelter.

2. This documentary would focus on the young adult community at St. Pius Church in Granger and its coordinator Sean Allen. Sean helps organize events for young adults so that they can engage in their faith while connecting with each other and their community. Sean creates a variety of events including Bible Study meets, service projects in the community, and fellowship events. He enjoys his work in helping young adults grow in faith and become involved in their community. Sean works both in an office setting where he sets up activities and in a more involved setting where is takes part in those activities with the young adults while guiding them. 

3. This documentary would focus on the mission of Reins of Life therapeutic horseback riding center and the experiences of those involved. Reins of Life assists those both mentally, physically, and emotionally challenged through horseback riding sessions. The sessions all take place on a horse for the riders, but vary in the activities the riders do, from playing musical stalls to making a pizza for their horse. Volunteers can pick and choose how they are involved in Reins of Life, from cleaning stalls to feeding horses, from leading the horses to being a side walker. Thomas Hubbard, whose perspective will be included in the documentary, is a volunteer at Reins of Life and has been for the past two years. He currently works as a side walker, whose job is to ensure the safety of the riders while helping them engage in the activities.

  1. I would personally be interested in watching the first documentary. I think that he would be a unique person to interview, and it would provide a fresh and informative documentary.

  2. Great profiles and all good doc subjects. The doc on the chef would only work if you had access to the kitchen where he works. We would need to see him at work not just hear him talk about it. Reins of Life would be great if you have access to the horses. Lots of great b-roll opportunities there.
